Program Open But Can't See - Invisible!

This screenshot is actually for an invisible folder, but you get the point.

Yesterday I had a pile of stuff fall on my keyboard while a program was open. Today, the program opens but I can't see it.

The program was open but invisible on the screen in Windows 7. The window shrunk to a size of zero and wouldn't even let me maximize to view! Re-installing didn't work. Right-clicking the preview window and selecting Maximize wasn't a option. Alt+Tab and WinKey+Tab didn't do the trick either (although WinKey+Tab looks pretty cool). Cascading or stacking the windows by right clicking the start menu bar didn't do jack!

I had to use WinKey+Up Arrow to maximize the window (after I clicked on the preview window on the start menu bar) and then drag the title bar down to un-maximize. At first I just clicked un-maxmize, but it dissapeared again. When it was back to normal, I closed and re-opened to make sure the size stuck. Sure enough, it did! See below for some more useful shortcuts:

Use WinKey+Shift+M to restore minimized windows to the desktop.
Use WinKey+Up Arrow to maximize the current window.
Use WinKey+Left Arrow to maximize the window to the left side of the screen.
Use WinKey+Right Arrow to maximize the window to the right side of the screen.

AVG Blocking False Positive Executables?

HOW TO DISABLE AVG FREE (TEMPORARILY)

"The Resident Shield is the main component protecting you from viruses. It scans accessed files and if a virus is found, the access to the file is blocked. This applies to executing infected programs, as well as to opening of infected documents or any other files.

Disabling of the Resident Shield is sometimes recommended before installation of a new software or drivers, since it can prevent conflicts that would otherwise occur during their installation. This however applies only to limited number of specific programs and drivers, and there is no general reason why AVG Resident Shield should interfere with an installation of any application.

To disable the Resident Shield, please:
1. Open AVG User Interface.
2. Double-click on the Resident Shield.
3. Un-tick the option Resident Shield active.
4. Save the changes.

Please do not forget to activate the Resident Shield again once you performed the tasks requiring its deactivation."

APC PowerChute Business Edition Agent - Default Username & Password

Found this useful tip regarding APC PowerChute Business Edition Agent. When it comes to a default admin password: There is none! If you need to reset your username/password, you'll have to reinstall the suite on your server/workstation/whatever. In the process, I ended upgrading from v8 to v9 using the free 5 node edition found here:

50GB of FREE online storage space from ADrive.com

Last week I was looking around for a free service online to backup some important files. It's always good to keep a backup in case of an emergency. I've been using SkyDrive for a lot of my backups but it's limited to around 2GB. And then I found out about ADrive...

Its capacity is the size of a dual layer blu ray disc. Enough to store around 12,500 or so MP3s. Since it's a free service there is no telling how long it will actually be in business though. Definitely worth looking at if you need to work with larger files and don't have a decent size USB drive to move them. Did I mention it's free? Yeah, that's actually pretty nice. Oh cloud based storage, you are so convenient.

Classic Menu for Office

I've had several requests from users to keep older versions of Office because they don't know how to navigate the newer Office "ribbon" menus. Microsoft has made it a pain for legacy users who may not have the patience or time to relearn an entirely new navigation system.

UBitMenu is a snazzy little program that adds back the classic menu from Office 2003 to your modern Office suite. It adds an extra tab called "Menu" with all the familiar items you are used to. Here's the website where you can download the applicaton:
