HOW TO DISABLE AVG FREE (TEMPORARILY)
"The Resident Shield is the main component protecting you from viruses. It scans accessed files and if a virus is found, the access to the file is blocked. This applies to executing infected programs, as well as to opening of infected documents or any other files.
Disabling of the Resident Shield is sometimes recommended before installation of a new software or drivers, since it can prevent conflicts that would otherwise occur during their installation. This however applies only to limited number of specific programs and drivers, and there is no general reason why AVG Resident Shield should interfere with an installation of any application.
To disable the Resident Shield, please:
1. Open AVG User Interface.
2. Double-click on the Resident Shield.
3. Un-tick the option Resident Shield active.
4. Save the changes.
Please do not forget to activate the Resident Shield again once you performed the tasks requiring its deactivation."

Found this useful tip regarding APC PowerChute Business Edition Agent. When it comes to a default admin password: There is none! If you need to reset your username/password, you'll have to reinstall the suite on your server/workstation/whatever. In the process, I ended upgrading from v8 to v9 using the free 5 node edition found here:

Last week I was looking around for a free service online to backup some important files. It's always good to keep a backup in case of an emergency. I've been using SkyDrive for a lot of my backups but it's limited to around 2GB. And then I found out about ADrive...

For those of you out there that are job searching, Craigslist.org can be a great tool! It can also be a great source for SPAM and fake posts. If get an email from an unknown sender and it looks fishy, try Google searching some lines of the message. If you're like me and replied to a ton of job postings, the source of these spam messages are damn near impossible to track down. That is unless the subject line was in the suspected spam email and you printed a pdf copy of the ad - Aha! Although the lure of a potential job may be tempting, be aware that some people (try to) make a living from scamming and spamming you!
Here's a message I got today from some random internet guy telling me about a job opportunity:
- Allen Jones
If you Google search that last bit: "Get back to me with your total cost for the service I await your urgent response" you'll find several websites with people asking if they just got a SPAM message. When in doubt, Google it!
To quote famous circus man P.T. Barnum "There's a sucker born every minute" Don't be a sucker. Research fishy emails to avoid phishing scams! Here's more useful info on Craiglist's About Spam page: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams
On a funny side-note, Googling the name "Allen Jones" I discovered a sculptor that makes tables that look like look like pretty ladies. His work inspired the tables for the milk bar scenes in A Clockwork Orange.
If you go to http://www.google.com/chrome, you can download one of my favorite web browsers:
Google Chrome Speed Tests - HD
I ran into an issue a couple weeks back and discovered that when you install Chrome from http://www.google.com/chrome, the program installs to your local profile. This means that if you have someone else using your computer on a separate account, the 2nd user might not see your Chrome installation.
Solution?
If you go to http://pack.google.com, you can download and install Chrome via Google Pack. This will install Chrome in your My Programs folder rather than your local profile (where there's a good chance that nobody else could access it).
Probably the largest influence I had growing up was watching (the now defunct) ZDTV/TechTV back when shows like The ScreenSavers, Call for Help, Silicon Spin, and Gamespot TV/Extended Play were on the air. I started watching around the time Leo Laporte and Kate Botello hosted The ScreenSavers, but I remember watching more shows with Leo Laporte & Patrick Norton. Eventually my cable provider dropped ZDTV shortly after it turned into TechTV.
These shows inspired me to persue a career in information technology. Everything from learning about HTML code to building my first custom PC, I owe to the crew over at ZDTV. There's still plenty of great tips/tricks/information on technology from these shows.
The hosts of the shows eventually moved on to other projects after ZDTV/TechTV got merged/canceled and are still out there today in the world of tech. The channel now exists as G4 but a good chunk of the crew work at Revision3 now.
I huge internet shout-out to the whole crew from ZDTV. I'd like to thank the following in particular for inspiring me the most: Roger Chang, Jessica Corbin, Yoshi DeHerrera, John C. Dvorak, Leo Laporte, Sarah Lane, Jim Louderback, Megan Morrone, Patrick Norton, Chris Prillo, Kevin Rose, Martin Sargent, Catherine Schwartz, Adam Sessler & Morgan Webb.
Leo Laporte has his own site called The TWiT Newscast network, operates a blog and has an archive of podcasts/radio shows @ TechGuyLabs.com:

Kate Botello operates a personal website, owns a theatre production company, a web design company, and runs a children's theater summer camp in Traverse City, Michigan:

Patrick Norton currently hosts shows called HD Nation & Tekzilla on Revision3:

The coolest nostalgia bomb that was dropped on me recently was when I re-discovered tons of old ZDTV clips online. You can check out a boatload of shows archived via these links or do a search online for more:
